Joulukalenteri - Christmas Calendar - vol. 11

Perinteinen jouluaatto? Kyllä kiitos :) Meillä on melkein aina ollut sama kaava aattona, ihan paria poikkeusta lukuunottamatta. Äiti huhkii keittiössä aamusta, herää siis ekana. Kuusi on tuotu ulkoa kylppäriin tai autotalliin sulamaan aatonaattona ja sitten aamupäivällä se tuodaan sisään. Tietysti pitää vääntää ja kääntää, että se on suurinpiirtein suorassa siinä jalassaan. Kynttilät laitetaan ihan ensimmäisenä oksille, sähköiset sellaiset. Sitten olkitähti. Siinä samalla on vanhempien vaatehuoneesta kaivettu esille koristelaatikot ja aletaan laittaa muita hiluja. Olohuoneen seinällä on ryijy, jonka yläreunan päälle muuttaa joulunpyhiksi parvi punatulkkuja (villalangasta tehtyjä). Niistä pikkuruisimmat (peukalonpään kokoiset) löytyvät yleensä kuitenkin kuusesta.

Traditional Christmas Eve? Yes please :) In Finland the 24th of December is even bigger Thing than the actual Christmas Day. My family has had the same schedule for almost always, only few exceptions. Mom wakes up first, she's in the kitchen from the early morning. Tree has been moved inside = bathroom or the garage the night before, in the morning it's brought to the living room. Of course it takes a While to sort it straight, after which it takes another While to put the (electric) candles on it. Meanwhile the boxes full of decorations have been dug out from the closet. After candles it's time to put the straw star in top of the tree :) Then -> other stuff. We have a flock of bullfinches (made out of woollen yarn), they tend to live on top of the old rug on the wall. Only the smallest, size of the tip of the thumb, hang out on the Christmas tree.

No nyt kun on saatu kuusi kuosiin, päästään katsomaan telkkarista Lumiukko. Ja sen ihan viime hetkien kanssa menee päällekkäin Joulurauhan julistus Suomen Turussa - joka me kuunnellaan radiosta. Viime vuosina on ollut telkkari auki, mutta äänettömällä! :D Radiolähetyksessä on ihan oma tunnelmansa. Julistuksen jälkeen joulupuuro - nammmmmm... :) Aamupala on syöty aiemmin. Pikkuhiljaa laitellaan ruokia ja lämmitetään saunaa, naisten vuoro (mä ja äiti) on yleensä ekana. Muut väestä sitten sen jälkeen parissa vuorossa. Saunomisen jälkeen pöydän laittamista ja pakettien asettelu kuusen tykö. Puetaan kivat juhlavat vaatteet :)

Okay, now the tree is ready. Time for The Snowman on tv (they show it every Xmas Eve). At the same time as the movie ends, the broadcast from Turku begins. They show the declaration of Christmas Peace on tv too, but there's a totally different atmosphere when you listen to it from the radio. Sometimes we do have the tv on, but mute. After the declaration we eat the Christmas porridge (rice), yummmm.... :) Breakfast was earlier. Soon we continue with prepairing the food for dinner, getting the sauna warm. First it's the ladies turn (mom and me), then the others. After sauna (and sauna drinks) setting the big table, also parcels find their way under the tree. Dressing ourselves nicely :)

Kun on syöty ja syöty vähän lisää (liikaa), laitettu ruokia pois... Siinä välissä ehtii katsoa vielä Samu Sirkan joulutervehdyksen :D Valutaan hiljaksiin olohuoneen sohville ja nojatuoleille. Onhan niitä lahjapaketteja ilmestynyt joka vuosi, vaikka puhutaankin, että laitettaisiin vähemmän. Musta on ihanaa etsiä tai tehdä lahjuksia ja paketoida niitä (teippifriikki). Tämän vuoden salaisuudet on vielä vähän kesken, mutta ideat jo oikestaan valmiina. Perinteet jatkuvat lahjaseremoniassa: jokainen avaa vuorollaan yhden, lukee tietysti kortin ensin muille :) Kun ollaan paperien ympäröimänä, otetaan vielä esille se kakku ja keitetään teet & kahvit. Osa kansasta lähtee keskiyön joulukirkkoon. Joulumieli on tullut väkisinkin ja kun kirkosta lähdetään Maa on niin kaunis:ta laulaen, ei voi olla huonolla tuulella. Pään painuessa tyynylle uni vie tajun samantien. Ja on hyvä olla.

Done with all the eating, let's put the foods away... There's also time to watch Jiminy Cricket's Christmas special :D Then sloooowly find our way back to living room. There are always presents, no matter of the talk "let's-not-get-much-this-year". I Love finding or making gifts, also Wrapping them (tape freak). This year's secrets aren't ready, but the ideas are. More traditions in the gift-opening-ceremony: everyone opens a present on their turn, first one has to read the card out loud :) After gifting we bring out the cake and make tea & coffee. Some leave then for the midnight Christmas church. Christmas spirit has taken over your mind almost secretly and when you leave the church singing this lovely hymn "Maa on niin kaunis", you can not be in a bad mood. When resting your head on the pillow, sleep takes over you instantly. Life feels good.

p.s. The hymn is originally German, but I don't know if it's been sung in English too. The Swedish name is "Härlig är jorden". The title would be something like "The Earth is so beautiful". Lumen valo is an a cappella group (Finnish one). Here are their pages :)
