FNB & Hartwall Arena

Last Saturday was just Grrrreat! :) I'm not talking about us losing the hockey game against Sweden nor the fact that our song in Eurovision contest got only 13 points... Instead, I'm saying it was just superduper awesome that 9000 people got to see our national ballet company perform - for free. There were seats for even more people, but in my opinion, that was a good result already!

Me and a ballet geek friend, her 2 daughters + one of their friends and her mom + my friend's sister and her husband all met outside the Hartwall Arena in Pasila (Helsinki). There was enough time to check out the powder room, stand in a que for a while and then, get in & choose seats. Most people had these advance tickets that told which area one could sit in, but no precise seat number. We found a nice place, right opposite the stage.

Although we had to wait quite a "while" for the evening to start, it didn't feel that long. It was fun to look at all the people, try to spot familiar faces, catch up with the friend etc.

The host of the event was Marco Bjurström, former dancer himself, a choreographer and teacher. He's also been a host of a very popular music game show in tv, these days works also as a news reporter on channel Four (Nelonen). Sometimes I find his energetic style a bit overwhelming, but this evening it was ok. He introduced the works and some dancers interestingly, though I'd have preferred to hear All the soloist names... But you have to keep up with the time, that I understand :)

After a short speech by himself, Mister Bjurström invited FNB's artistic director to the stage, Kenneth Greve that is. They chatted for some minutes, thanking a lot of people, telling how the idea of this event came up and finally also introduced the 2 other tall men on stage. They were players from the team Jokerit, whose home arena this was/is. (They didn't have much else to do than just stand there and smile, the be swept away by some ballerinas.)

As it was forbidden to take photos of the works performed, I only have some shots of the final bows. But maybe they give some idea of how fabulous all of it was! :)

"It all" began with some scenes from the 3rd act of Swan Lake. This is the ending  pose. Eun-Ji Ha with Andrew Bowman, Nicholas Ziegler as Rothbart (on the right).

Opera singers Helena Juntunen and Jyrki Anttila sang a duet from La Traviata. I missed the name of the accompanist, but he & the accordion were very nice indeed in this number!

Next up was the cool (and sweaty/hot) sauna scene from The Snow Queen. Mr Bjurström introducing it in this one.

After sauna it was time for Snow Queen herself & underlings team up - right in the middle of the floor!  Too bad the camera man was so close to them, we missed the most cool part... 

A big fight scene between snow queen folks and the goblins, ended with peaceful bows... ;) Mai Komori on the righ as the Queen, Wilfried Jacobs in the middle as the "main goblin" (sorry, don't remember the correct role name!!). Terhi Räsänen was the lynx maiden, on the left.

Yes, The Sleeping Beauty - roses... :) So lovely! Also there was a hunting scene. This is from the end, they're about to bow. The tutus are gorgeous.

Okay, there was this forbidden photo... But as a punishment my camera's battery died Right after taking this. 

I tried to take some pics with my phone, but they were super messy and well, not good. But here's one of them anyway.

The dancers of Walking Mad, one of my favourites (as all the others... :D).  Tuukka Piitulainen had a solo in this, he's a name to remember.

The last works we saw were a song by H. Juntunen (from the Monty Python -musical 'Spamalot'), a hilarious number! Then a comic bit called The Sofa. I've seen it twice before and still it made me laugh. On stage were Linda Haakana, Samuli Poutanen and Antti Keinänen, a trio that amused us last May, too.

Final number was an extract from Minus 7 (by Ohad Naharin). It really is something else. Also some members of the audience got to take part in it, yay! :)

Then it was time to leave, go home. I managed to fell in the stairs = one bruised knee. It still hurts, but we had a lot of fun, so I don't mind :) Tomorrow I'm going to Helsinki again, to have 1 (or 2) ballet classes. It's my final chance to experience Madame Greve's wonderful teaching, as the classes next year will be on Wednesday's and I'm working till evening. So, tomorrow it is. And now, some sleep!

Fouetté en tournant

Last week we started doing a simple routine for prepairing them (barré), on Wednesday we did the routine in the center/middle floor! Woooooow and yikes x million! But I managed to keep my balance there, though there IS a lot to do with my core department. And the knees. And the balance... Anyway, yesterday we did the routine in 2 groups, standing around the "playpen" (a square-ish barré one can set up in the middle of studio). 2 x balance, then turn, balance (1), turn, balance, turn, switch sides. All in all, we/both groups did 2 rounds on both sides. And as the other group was in action, us others could just watch or practice by the side barrés (I chose to practice :)).

Let me tell you: I've tried fouettés only twice before and both times it was just like "let's try this for fun girls..." And it was not a pretty sight! :D This time (yesterday) my 1st round was miserable, 2nd much better! I did grab the barré too quickly after turning etc, but there were some almost clean turns. And our teacher saw them, gave immediate feedback (positive, yay). I'm hoping we'll keep them in repertoire for good, as they'll run away very quickly without practicing. And I'm Not dreaming of doing the turns in center for a while, I'm very happy & satisfied with the preparatory routines. Also the quantity will probably eventually be maybe 2 in a row, haha... :P 


To close this post, I'll present one of my favorite ballet bits via youtube. And it's my favorite because of the magnificent ballerina, Nina Ananiashvili. Her energy is unbelievable. It was amazing to see her live, even just sitting in the audience as a ballet competition judge! :D Unfortunately these particular videos can only be shared as a link, but do watch them. My pirouettes en dedans & en dehors were quite clean (singles) yesterday. I've really tried to pay attention on the speed, knees, core and spotting. It seems to have worked, at least a little! :) Shall try to keep up working on them. Turning is so much fun!

Leningradin Kirov-baletti esittää: Joutsenlampi (1968)

No nyt se vihdoin (okei, lainasin torstaina) tuli katsottua. Aivan kelvollinen oli :D

Alkutekstit olivat venäjää, onneksi pääosan esittäjät sentään käännetty suomeksi. Ja koreografit. Ja ilmeisesti kapellimestari. Odette-Odilena tanssi E. Jevtejeva (miksei ollut etunimeä keneltäkään, höh!), Prinssi Siegfriedinä D. Markovski, Rothbartina M. Esambajev. Muita ei tanssijoista kerrottu (suomeksi). Se oletettu kapellimestari oli V. Fedotov. Ja tosiaan vuosikerta 1968, eli ei ihan tuoreinta materiaalia - eipä kyllä vhs-versioita enää mistään saakaan (paitsi kirjastosta, hehee). Koreografia: M. Petipa - L. Ivanova - ?. Sergejeva.

Lavastus oli aika simppeli ja koko ajan oli semmoinen tuntu, että no teatterissa ollaan (välillä erottui lattiasta jotkut saumat). Värimaailma oli muutenkin kauttaaltaan hillitty - paitsi 3. näytöksessä Rothbartilla oli hetken aikaa oranssi viitta :D Aika usein kuvattiin yllättävän läheltä, ei näkynyt läheskään niin paljon kokovartalokuvaa ja jalkatyöskentelyä, kuin olisia esimerkiksi mua itseäni kiinnostanut. Leikkaukset oli paikotellen kummallisia ja töksähteleviä, mutta varmasti aikanaan olleet ihan ok (nykyään niin eri meininki). Yllättävän usein käytettiin myös jotain päällekäiskuva-systeemiä efektinä, varmaan taiteellista/elokuvallista meininkiä tuomaan. Mua se kyllä vähän häiritsi :P

Mitä lähikuvaan tulee, niin jossain toisen näytöksen alkupuolella (muistaakseni) kuvattiin kuorolaisten käsiä kun seisoivat nätisti asennossa. Kaikilla oli pitkät ja laitetut kynnet :D En kyllä tiedä, mikä on henki nykypäivänä ja Suomessa moisen suhteen, mutta tossa se huvitti kovasti. Tulee semmoinen olo, että mitä jos tanssin tiimellyksessä raapivat vahingossa toisiaan... Yksityiskohtana kiinnitti huomiota myös sen ajan kärkitossujen erilainen muotoilu (nimenomaan kärjestä). Toki niitä nykyäänkin on monenlaisia, mutta noi näyttivät jotenkin extrakapeilta. Odilella oli muuten valkoiset tossut, jotenkin odotin mustia. Samaiseen asuun kuului megatöyhtö päässä :D Ja kun nyt asustukseen päästiin, niin sillä prinssin kaverilla (joka muuten tässä versiossa oli hovinarri!) oli ihmeelliset tuntosarvet päässään :D Semmoiset kun johonkin leppäkerttu-asuun voisi kuvitella kuuluvan. Ekassa näytöksessä ko. jampan asu näytti koostuvan virkatuista palasista, en päässyt ihan selvyyteen mitä sen piti kuvastaa. Myöhemmin oli sitten ihan harlekiinikuvioista trikoota yllänsä. Ja ne tuntosarvet. Mutta hienosti miekkonen loikki ja piruetoi.

Rothbart ja Odette olivat mun mielestä ainoat, jotka eläytyivät kasvoillaankin. Siegfried oli ihan maitonaama, vaikka dramatiikkaa piisasi - ja sitä lähikuvaa. Yhden ilmeen mies (mutta hienot oli hypyt silläkin).

Pienet joutsenet suoriutuivat kauniisti tanssistaan, mutta tempo oli ehkä vähän nopeampi kuin mihin on jotenkin tottunut. Tuntui, että kuvaa oli nopeutettu :D Hauska yksityiskohta oli alkupuolella tanssia yhden höyhenen putoaminen - vahinko tietenkin, mutta huvittavaa, ettei sitä oltu poistettu otoksesta. Joutsenkuoro oli ylipäätään kyllä kaunista katsottavaa, linjat yhtenäisiä jne. Sitä vähän ihmettelin, kun neljännen näytöksen (onko niitä niin monta? :D ...no joka tapauksessa sitten, kun Rothbart ja Odile on häipyneet bileistä ja prinssi laukkaa metsään takaisin) alussa oli yhtäkkiä myös 6 kuorolaista mustissa joutsen-vetimissä. Ei ne tehneet mitään erityistä, siellä uiskentelivat seassa. Ehkä mä missasin sitten jotain... :P

Niin että kyllä toi nyt kannatti katsoa. Kotiväellä on jossain vhs:lla myös sellainen Joutsenlampi, jossa on Natalia Makarovan selostukset näytösten välissä. Täytyy joku päivä käydä hakemassa se ja katsoa pitkästä aikaa. Livenä oon nähnyt teoksen vaan kerran, silloin kun uusi oopperatalo oli Ihan Uusi. En muista ulkoa, kuka/ketkä oli pääosissa. Pitää jostain kaivaa se brosyyri (kyllä, olen säästänyt sen :)).
